Instrument Rating IR(H) on Bell 206

Holding an instrument rating- IR(H) -  has been a requirement for new pilots to fly in offshore operations for many years. Now, operators of VIP or business aviation helicopters or EMS operators request this qualification from new pilots as well to ensure safe flight operations during night and marginal weather conditions.

Therefore, the qualification to fly in IMC conditions gets increasingly more important for commercial helicopter pilots.

The flight school of DHD Heliservice GmbH offers an IR(H) training course on a single engine turbine helicopter uniquely throughout Germany.

The advantage over other IR(H) training courses which are offered on twin engine helicopters is among other thing the tuition fees which are several thousand euros lower.

The practical IR(H) training takes place at our facility located at the Hamburg Airport (EDDH). The training consists of 20 hours training in a FNPT II simulator where the student acquires the skills to perform instrument departures, approaches, briefings and holding procedures.

What has previously been learned is deepened in 25 flight hours in our Bell 206 Jet Ranger. This helicopter is equipped with a modern glass cockpit by Garmin and a 2 axes auto pilot.

After completion of training the applicant needs to  take a check flight with an examiner assigned by the german aviation authority (LBA).

In order to begin with the practical IR(H) training, you will find the requirements according to FCL.610 below:

  •  holder of a valid EASA PPL(H) including night privileges / EASA CPL(H)

  • passed IR(H)/ ATPL(H) IR theory*

  • at least 50 hours cross country flight experience as pilot in command (helicopter)

  • type rating Bell206*

*can be obtained in our flight school

For PPL (H) / CPL (H) holders who are also holders of a valid instrument flight rating for fixed wing aircraft IR (A), the training is reduced to 10 flight hours in a helicopter plus a practical check flight.
